This is a story of an artist redefining her identity amidst the new and the old, between repression and celebration.

Grandee imagines a fantastical version of Switzerland in which Ticino is reinvented as a tropical QUEENdom, a place that mirrors the region of Yunnan in southern China, from which artist Peilian Li hails. This project represents an experimental approach to artistic documentation, exploring the confluence of my diverse cultural identities. It navigates the border between fantasy and documentary, examining notions of apocryphal and emotional truth. As a work of video art, it brings together artists of diverse cultural backgrounds and gender identities from around the world.

Grandee Dorji (*1996, Beijing, China) lives and works in Lausanne. Grandee Dorji is an artist and filmmaker. He graduated from ECAL/École cantonale d’art de Lausanne in 2023 in visual arts, and currently studying at HEAD Work.master. Dorji‘s oeuvre is characterised by a unique fusion of Chinese and Western cinematic influences, drawing from a diverse range of genres including television shows and reality TV. Through his mixed approach to filming and performance, Dorji delves into themes of identity, borders, and sexuality, often employing a direct and humorous lens to provoke thought and reflection.

Peilian Li (Emma Bucks) is an interdisciplinary artist with a research-based approach, originally from China and currently residing in Switzerland. She graduated from ECAL/École Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne (MFA, 2022) and has exhibited at various Swiss institutions such as Villa Ciani in Lugano and the Musée Romain de Lausanne-Vidy, as well as internationally in New York, Milan, and Yerevan. She has participated in prestigious residencies, including the Cité des Arts in Paris (July-September 2024) and Uncool Artist in Brooklyn (December 2024), and received awards such as the Work Grant from Pro Helvetia Switzerland in 2023.
